Displayed is a full ticket to the 1983 NCAA Men's Basketball Sem-Finals held on April 2, 1983, at University Arena, on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In one Semi-Final, North Carolina State defeated Georgia 67-60. In the other Semi-Final, the Houston Cougars, nicknamed Phi Slama Jama for their dunking ability, met Louisville, also known for their dunking prowess and nicknamed The Doctors of Dunk. Houston won this Semi-Final 94-81. In the Finals, Houston, with All-American center Akeem Olajuwon, were prohibitive favorites, but coach Jim Valvano's North Carolina State won 54-52 on a buzzer-beater when Derrick Wittenberg took a desperation 30-foot shot, and the ball fell short and it was grabbed by N.C. State's Lorenzo Charles, who dunked at the last second to give North Carolina State the national Championship. The Final was one of the greatest upsets in NCAA Tournament history.
