"Washington," the old saying goes, "First in war, first in peace, and last in the American League." Displayed is an original, Type I, Cecil W. Stoughton color photograph of President John F. Kennedy, on Opening Day, April 8, 1963, in a moment either before or right after throwing out the ceremonial pitch at Washington's D.C. Stadium. The original Washington American League franchise was known as the Senators at the team's and league's debut (1901), and from 1905-1956 also as the Nationals. Officially, the team was called the Senators again from 1957-60, and then the club moved to Minnesota to become the Minnesota Twins. A new Washington Senators team became an AL expansion franchise in 1961, and the team stayed in Washington until moving to Dallas, Texas, in 1972 to become the Texas Rangers. The above-mentioned adage about Washington finishing in last place was literally true six times from 1934-59, and in most other seasons in that time period, the Senators were in the AL second division. The 1963 Washington Senators actually finished in last place - twice. The team's 56-106 record left the club in 10th place in a 10-team league, and the Senators' attendance that year, a mere 535,604 fans, was good for last place in the AL attendance race. Mickey Vernon started the season as the Senators' manager, Eddie Yost held the reins temporarily for a game, and Hall of Famer Gil Hodges managed the team for most of the season. The team did have Hall of Fame outfielder Minnie Minoso, and Jimmy Piersall in center field, but the overall talent was lacking. Tragically, President John F. Kennedy would be assassinated on Nov. 23rd, less than eight months after this Opening Day photo. The offered photo measures 5x5". Some of the color has washed out because of the passage of years, but overall, the photo is in fine condition. Written on the back, in pencil, by an unknown hand, is "c 81-1-63."
