Rare baseball signed by pitcher Wilcy Moore, a key member of the legendary 1927 New York Yankees. Moore has scripted his name, "Wilcy Cy Moore" in black fountain pen (grading 5/10), with the signature beginning in the middle of a side panel and extending halfway into the sweet spot. Moore's signature is scarce in any form, but especially alone on a baseball. This is just the second we have ever offered, and we cannot recall having seen more than one or two others at auction. 1927 was Moore's rookie season and although he was thirty years old, he quickly proved to be a key asset to the talent-laden club. Working primarily in relief, Moore won nineteen games (tied for second most on the club) while leading the team in both ERA (2.28) and Saves (13). Moore was rewarded for his regular-season work by manager Miller Huggins in the 1927 World Series. Moore started Game 4 and closed out the Series for the Yankees by defeating the Pirates, 4-3, allowing just three hits and one earned run in the complete-game win. Despite his great success in 1927, Moore suffered from an arm injury the next few seasons and played only five more seasons in the Majors. He died in 1963 at the age of sixty-five, which was well before single-signed baseballs became the ideal for autograph collectors. The red-stitched baseball (no manufacturer's stampings are visible) is darkly toned and displays several moderate abrasions and blemishes (none seriously affecting Moore's signature). Good condition.
