"Hit 'em where they ain't," was the legendary hitting philosophy of Wee Willie Keeler, and the Hall of Fame outfielder proved his theory by hitting a lifetime .341 in the Major Leagues. Displayed is a 1930s copyrighted vintage Type II photograph of Keeler, used for his 1948 Hall of Fame Exhibit Card. The photo was taken while Keeler was in his playing career, from 1892-1910. Keeler was only 5'4", one of the shortest players to ever play big league ball. The left-handed batter used a bat that was only 30" long, reportedly the shortest bat ever used in the Major Leagues. He was a member of all three New York City teams: The Brooklyn Superbas (later called Dodgers), the New York Highlanders (later called Yankees), and the New York Giants. He also was a key member of the Baltimore Orioles dynasty of the 1890s. Keeler's .424 batting average in 1897 is the highest average for a left-handed batter in history. Keeler was a superb bunter who would often bunt down the third base line, but if the third baseman played in, Keeler would slap the ball past him. The vintage photo does not indicate the year the photo was taken or the team for which Keeler was playing. The approx. 6.5x8.5" photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as TYPE II AUTHENTIC. The photo has a few folds, but it is in overall nice condition. Note: card not included.
