Presented is the opportunity to possess a unique vintage baseball item, a Detroit Tigers Briggs Stadium postcard vending machine. Briggs Stadium was constructed at a site on the corner of Michigan and Turnbull Avenues in the Corktown section of Detroit in 1912. It replaced a wooden ballpark on the same site that had been used since 1884. The 1912 ballpark was called Navin Field, named after the owner of the Detroit Tigers. To honor the later owner of the Tigers, the ballpark was re-named Briggs Stadium in 1938, and then re-named Tiger Stadium in 1961. The final Major League game at the site was at the end of the 1999 season. Over the years, many Tigers Hall of Famers played at the ballpark: Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford, Mickey Cochrane, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Jim Bunning, Al Kaline, and Alan Trammell - to name just a few. Under its various names, the ballpark hosted four World Series that resulted in Tigers World Championships: 1935, '45, '68, and '84. The site was also the former home field of the Detroit Lions football team. Regarding the postcard vending machine, we want to be clear that the Briggs Stadium postcard on the front is not the one that was meant to be displayed in this machine and this machine did not distribute commercial postcards. That being said, the collector who owned this iterated the featured postcard, and it makes for a great display. The machine is from the 1940s-50s. It does not include a key, but the front is not locked and can be opened. The postcard and the machine are vintage and original. The front reads, "Buy Sanitary United States Government Postal Cards 10c/Pull Handle/Harlee-George Inc. 2008 Utica Ave. B'KLYN 34, N.Y." This was meant to distribute blank government postcards which already had the postage paid on them. The machine is 7.5" wide, approx. 15" high, and has a depth of 6", and the offering weighs 12 lbs. There is some rust in small areas, minor loss or bending of metal in a few spots, a few small stains, a possible repair to the lower rear corner, a thin line of paint or glue residue across the top, and some paint chipping in some spots. Despite the aforementioned minor imperfections, and considering the age of the item, the machine is in overall excellent condition.
