Displayed is a 1970s James "Bubby" Braxton game worn Buffalo Bills helmet. Braxton was a fullback in the NFL from 1971-78. He played all of his football in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills, except for part of the '78 season, when he finished his career with the Miami Dolphins. He was an outstanding runner at West Virginia University, but in the NFL his main contribution was as a lead blocker for O.J. Simpson, the Bills' halfback. In the NFL, Braxton ran for 2,890 yards on 741 carries and scored 25 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 144 passes, for 1,473 yards and six touchdowns. A knee injury helped to shorten his career. Braxton passed away in 1986. Ed Abramoski, the head trainer for the Buffalo Bills during Braxton's time with the team, said, "James Braxton was one of the smartest players I've ever seen." The white Riddell helmet has red and blue trim. Size 7 1/4 is machine-stamped in black on the rear suspension strand. The four fasteners to the face mask, which contain screws which go into the helmet to hold the facemask in place, have each been replaced. Both sides of the helmet have the iconic Buffalo logo. Braxton's number 34 is in red numerals at the back of the helmet. The helmet exhibits heavy wear with paint transfers, scuff marks, scratches, and some minor surface loss.
