"A life is not important except on the impact it has on other lives," said Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson. By Robinson's own definition, his life had profound importance - because while Robinson was a superb baseball player, his overall contributions to society surpassed even his tremendous accomplishments as a player. Presented is a Jackie Robinson signed copy of his autobiography, called My Own Story, as told to Wendell Smith. The baseball statistics are certainly there: A .311 lifetime average for his Major League career, all with the Brooklyn Dodgers. An important part of six Brooklyn pennant winners and the Brooklyn Dodgers' only World Championship, in 1955. The 1947 Rookie of the Year Award and the 1949 NL MVP, when Robinson won the NL batting crown. Robinson also led the NL two times in stolen bases. As the first African American in modern baseball, Robinson's success came under enormous pressure. He was a national figure who paved the way for many civil rights advances. During and after his playing career, Robinson was a staunch civil rights advocate, traveling all over the country to where he felt he was needed. The offered signed book was published in 1948. The listed publisher is Greenberg. The book measures 5.5x8', and it has 172 pages. Robinson signed on the fly page, using blue ink from a ballpoint pen. Robinson's signature is faded, but still clearly legible. The book shows great use. The spine covering is partially detached, and the book's corners show substantial wear with some loss of surface material. The book has no dust jacket. There are some small stains on the cover, and the book's pages show foxing and darkening from the passage of time. The book comes with a JSA Letter of Authenticity, with Certification number: BB53525. The flyleaf page where Robinson signed also has a Certification sticker matching the above-mentioned number. Robinson's autograph rates 8/10. Except for the cover, the book is in good condition.
