Presented is a group of four (4) original Babe Ruth black & white photographs, with one of the photos showing "The Sultan of Swat" at home on his 51st birthday: 1) The original Acme photo measures 4.5x7.1". The attached caption on back reads, in part, "THE BAMBINO IS 51/NEW YORK CITY/Celebrating his 51st birthday at home, America's King of Swat, Babe Ruth, wears a dressing gown as he relaxes in his favorite chair on Feb. 7th." The photo has some folds and scratch marks. There are pinholes from where the photo was at one time displayed, some additional folds in the corners, and a few, small stains. The photo is dated 2/7/45. 2) An original, undated The Sporting News/NBC/Acme photo, measuring 4.5x7.1". The Babe is nattily attired, spiffy with his two-tone shoes. He appears in good health and seems to be demonstrating bunting a baseball to a boy who is standing next to a master of ceremonies. Babe Ruth seldom bunted, and for good reason, since his managers preferred that he try for one of his 714 career homers rather than attempt a bunt, but Ruth was so talented at just about everything in baseball that he could almost assuredly have been a fine bunter. The photo has a few folds, mostly in or near the margins, and a few small stains, most likely from glue or mucilage. 3) An International News original photo of Babe Ruth, with Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy. The 6.5x8.5" photo shows the Inaugural National Baseball Hall of Famer visiting the long-time Yankee and Boston Red Sox manager during spring training at St. Petersburg, Florida. In part, the suggested caption attached to the photo back reads, "THE BAMBINO VISITS 'MARSE JOE'.... The Bambino, who came to see McCarthy's (Boston Red Sox) team play the St. Louis Cards is on a tour of baseball training camps in Florida. B-3-14-48." 4) A very somber photo from Aug 19, 1948, captioned, in part, "(NY26) HAWTHORNE, N.Y., RUTH'S FAMILY AT HIS FINAL RESTING PLACE-- Mrs. Claire Ruth (seated, second from left) widow of Babe Ruth, dabs her eyes with a handkerchief as she and other members of the family sit near home run king's casket at final funeral services in Gate of Heaven Cemetery here today." The photo back is stamped "RECEIVED EXAMINER REFERENCE LIBRARY Aug 20 1948." Overall, the photos provide a more-or-less private glimpse into Babe Ruth's years of baseball retirement.
