Displayed is a 1960s cut signature from Claude Rains, the famed English and American actor who was a 4-time Academy Award nominee as Best Supporting Actor. Rains was born into poverty, in 1889, in London, England. His father was an actor and Rains soon followed suit. He had a fine stage career in London and New York. He came back to London when England became involved in World War I, and Rains enlisted in the British Army. In battle, he was gassed by the Germans and wound up permanently losing 90% of the vision in his right eye. He overcame a speech impediment and a pronounced Cockney accent through great effort, and he had a career in American movies in which he often played a sophisticated villain. Probably his most famous role was "Renault" in Casablanca, with Humphrey Bogart. His four Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor; Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Casablanca, Mrs. Skeffington, and Notorious. The Rains' signature is on a piece of paper or card stock measuring approx. 2.25x4.1". Rains signed in blue fountain pen. The cut signature has been encapsulated and has a PSA/DNA Certified AUTO GRADE of NM-MT 8.
