Presented is a Babe Ruth original still Type I photo from the short movie he starred in called Slide Babe Slide (1932) for Universal Pictures. Slide Babe Slide was an almost 10-minute movie that was one of a series of five short movies under the umbrella title of Play Ball with Babe Ruth. The Bambino worked on these movies in a situation that was set up for him by Christy Walsh, who was, in effect, Babe Ruth's agent. The Slide Babe Slide short was written by Lou Breslow and directed by Benjamin Stoloff. The plot: Ruth is on a train and the train makes a stop for a while, and Ruth sees small boys playing a pick-up game near the train tracks. Ruth, in a suit and tie, leaves the train to join the game. When he says he is Babe Ruth, the boys don't believe him. Ruth takes off his jacket and enters the game as a pinch runner and steals a base, ripping a hole in his suit pants. He gives the boys baseball tips as the game progresses. One of the boys has a Ruth photo in a newspaper and when he shows the other boys Ruth's photo, the kids all realize it really is Babe Ruth in their midst. Finally, Ruth comes to bat and blasts a long drive, and as he is starting to run around the bases, the train whistle blows, signaling the train's departure. Ruth stops and is torn: Should he try for an inside the park homer or run to catch his train? His young teammates urge him to try for a home run. Ruth complies, speeds around the bases, touches home plate, grabs his jacket, and races for the train, hopping on the last car of the already moving train. As the boys run after the train, Ruth tosses many baseballs to them, as gifts. It's really quite charming. Ruth is especially engaging, and one can't help liking the friendly way in which he interacts with the boys. Ruth, an instinctive showman on the field, was also a good showman in the movies. His personal charisma translates right onto the movie screen. The still movie photo measures 7.9x10.1". The photo's top corners are cut back, there is edge wear along the bottom margin and tiny folds in both margins. In the lower right corner is written, "B.R. 1-9." The photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified as Type I AUTHENTIC.
