Displayed is a 1939 World Series Game 2 ticket stub for the New York Yankees' 4-0 win at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 5th over the Cincinnati Reds. In this contest, Monte Pearson, the Yankees' right-hander, pitched a two-hit complete game to best Bucky Walters, the Reds right-hander, who also pitched a complete game. The Yankees opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. New York first baseman Babe Dahlgren doubled and later scored on a ground out by shortstop Frankie Crosetti. Charlie Keller, the Yanks' left fielder, doubled home another run, and Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey singled to score Keller. The game's final run came in the fourth inning on a bases-empty home run by Dahlgren. A poignant factor in Dahlgren's success is that Lou Gehrig started the '39 season as the Yankees' first baseman, but he played only eight games and batted only .143, weakened by illness which later turned out to be ALS. Dahlgren was Gehrig's replacement. Hall of Fame center fielder Joe DiMaggio had a single in four at bats for New York. Pearson allowed only two singles, to the Reds' third baseman, Billy Werber, and to the Cincinnati catcher, Hall of Famer Ernie Lombardi. The Yankees went on to sweep the Series, for an amazing four straight World Championships. The ticket stub measures approx. 2.25x4". In part, it reads, "Rain Check 1939 World Series Game 2/Yankee Stadium/Enter at Gate 6/Upper Grandstand Unreserved/$3.30." The stub presents well, but it has a few light stains, with some light foxing and some darkening common with a ticket stub of this age. The stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded EX 5.
