Displayed is a Willie Stargell Pittsburgh Pirates' game used all-original away uniform, with matching jersey and pants. "Pops" Stargell (1940-2001) was a Hall of Fame left fielder and first baseman who played 21 Major League seasons (1962-82), all with the Pirates. Stargell worked hard on his game, yet he felt he was blessed with great ability. "Baseball for me was instinctive," said Stargell, "born with me as a gift from God." He was a key member of two World Champions and a 7-time All-Star. Willie batted a career .282, with 475 homers. In the '75 season when Stargell wore the offered uniform, he batted .295, with 22 home runs and 90 RBIs. Stargell had a mixed racial background. "I was bred as an outcast, part Negro and part Seminole. In my early years I was raised as an Indian," said the slugger. As a result of his ethnicity, Stargell developed a sensitivity about people of differing backgrounds that helped the 1979 World Champion Pirates stick together despite being a very racially mixed team. Stargell began singing the song "We Are Family", by Sister Sledge, after a Pirate comeback victory in May of '79, and the "We Are Family" Pirates soon became a national phenomenon. The gray knit jersey has gold and black trim. Across the chest is "PIRATES" in black sewn-on letters with gold trim. On the left chest is "8", in a black, sewn-on numeral with gold trim. On the left front outside tail is a sewn-on strip tag "8 46 75", for uniform number, size and year. Under the above-mentioned tag is a Wilson manufacturer's tag, showing size "48". On back is "8", in a sewn-on black numeral with gold trim. On the inside of the tail are the initials "H.D", written in black marker by an unknown hand. The pants have a strip tag on the rear waistband reading "8 38 24 75", for uniform number, waist size, inseam, and year. The rear waistband also has a Wilson manufacturer's tag showing the waist size (38). The left rear pants pocket has the initials "H.D." written in black marker in an unknown hand. Both the pants and the jersey show super use. Both pieces of the uniform, super use, are in nice condition. The offering comes with a Mears Grade 10 letter for the uniform.
