Displayed is a circa late 1970s Olympic Athlete travel bag issued by the USSR CCCP Soviet Union. The bag is a rare find, and we are told that it came from an Olympic boxer. The leather bag is in red, white and blue colors. The base measures approx. 6.5x19.5", and the height is approx. 16". Inside the bag is a 0.75x3.5" tag, written in Russian. In part, an English translation of the writing on the tag reads, "Moscow Factory of Leather Products/Price 15 Rubles." Also on the tag is "Oct. 17 -333-78." It is unclear what the "333" may represent. It is possible that the aforementioned machine printed tag may indicate that the bag was produced on Oct. 17, 1978. The bag has attractive handles, and a working zipper, with a small tear at one end of the zipper's surrounding leather. The bag shows the expected wear of a well-traveled bag. There are stains in various areas, scuff marks, and some small areas of loss of color. The red stripe on the bag has an area of discoloration of about 7" long. There is an approx. half-inch cut in the leather on one side. The offered travel bag could have been used during the 1980 Summer Olympics, held in Moscow, Russia. The United States and a number of other nations boycotted the Games to protest the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, and the USSR, and some aligned countries retaliated by boycotting the 1984 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles. The bag, with its prominent CCCP USSR markings from the then-existent Soviet Union, makes a tangible piece of history.
