Presented is a 1985 Rod Carew 3,000th hit game used ball, saved by Carew, from the August 4, 1985, contest between the Hall of Famer's California Angels and the visiting Minnesota Twins (Carew's former team) at Anaheim Stadium before a crowd of 41,630. Carew, who played mostly first and second base in his career, played 19 Major League seasons: Minnesota Twins (1967-78), California Angels (1997-85). The Official American League (Brown) ball has writing on it in ink, and all of the writing on the ball was done by Carew. Handwritten (printed by hand) on the balls is, "This is one of the game balls used on August 4, 1985, commemorating my 3,000th Major League hit." On the sweet spot, Carew signed his name in ink and then inscribed, 3,000 hits. In the August 4th game, Carew notched his 3,000th hit in the bottom of the third inning off Minnesota started Frank Viola. The hit came with one out and Brian Downing on second base. Downing moved to third base on Carew's hit, but the Angels failed to score in the inning when the next batter hit into a double play. The offered game ball shows excellent use, and the ball shows some darkening from the passage of time. Included in the offering is a red leather, left-handed batting glove that is the same style of glove that Carew wore to get his 3,000th hit, but we can't confirm that this was the glove. It was used by Carew, signed by him (in blue/black ink), and dated 1985, also in ink, in his hand. There are a number of small holes from use, of less than a half inch each, on the finger or palm areas of the glove. This includes a rip between the index and middle fingers. No size is listed on the glove, but inside, near the thumb area, is a machine stamped P. Overall, the glove shows great use including pine tar residue.
