For his effervescent, boyish enthusiasm and his constant hustle, Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter was nicknamed "the Kid." Displayed are Carter's "tools of ignorance" (his shin guards, chest protector, and mask) that were game worn by Carter during the 1991 season, when he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Carter played 19 Major League seasons: Montreal Expos (1974-84 & 1992), New York Mets (1985-89), San Francisco Giants (1990), Los Angeles Dodgers (1991). For his career, Carter batted .262, with 324 home runs and 1,225 RBIs. His peak years were in his first stint with the Montreal Expos, but he still had plenty to offer when he played for the New York Mets, helping them to the 1986 World Championship. The offered Carter game used equipment comes with a Letter of Authenticity and Provenance from the Gary Carter Foundation and came right from the collection of Gary Carter. There is a helmet listed in the letter that does not come with the lot. The offering also includes a mask (not listed on the letter), but it shows very light if any, use. It was Carter's mask and has "8" written in black marker by an unknown hand on the strap but may have been a backup for "Kid." The mask is machine stamped "All-Star FMSLW 25 EXT PRO Made in Taiwan." There is an "All-Star" tag on the back of the head strap as well as "All-Star" machine printed on the head strap. The mask has a blue protective face cage and blue straps, with brown padding. The mask is in EXCELLENT condition. One blue MacGregor (B61) shinguard shows nice use, particularly at the knees, with "KID" and "8" written inside, in black marker by an unknown hand. This shinguard has "MacGregor machine-printed in white below the knee, and this shinguard shows more use than the other shinguard. The second shinguard also has "MacGregor" machine printed under the knee section and also a white letter "M" machine-printed on the knee section itself. This second shinguard shows good wear, but less wear than the first shinguard. The blue chest protector, with white trim, also has "8" written inside and shows nice use. The lower strap has an "All-Star" manufacturer's tag. Carter was supposed to back up Mike Scioscia on the '91 Dodgers, but a Scioscia injury meant that Carter had to play in 101 games. In 246 at bats, he batted. 246, with six homers and 26 RBIs. Carter, who some feel is one of the top ten catchers of all time, had to wait until 2003, his sixth year on the ballot, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sadly, he passed away at only 57 years old, from complications from brain tumors, in 2012. The offered "Kid" catching equipment is in EXCELLENT condition and his catching equipment provides a fine remembrance for the hard-nosed player who was always a fan favorite for his great enthusiasm and gung-ho playing style.
