Willie Horton was the Detroit Tigers' first great African American player, a hitter whose bulging forearms helped him blast 325 lifetime homers. Presented is a circa 1970s Willie Horton Detroit Tigers game worn home white jersey. Most famed for his play with Detroit, Horton had an 18-year MLB career, all in the American League: Detroit Tigers (1963-77), Texas Rangers (1977), Cleveland Indians (1978), Oakland Athletics (1978), Toronto Blue Jays (1978), Seattle Mariners (1979-80). When he retired, his 325 AL home runs were the sixth-highest all-time for AL right-handed batters. A left fielder and designated hitter, Horton was a 4-time All-Star and a member of the 1968 Detroit Tiger World Champions. Horton achieved admiration both on-and-off the field. In the infamous 12th Street Riots in Detroit in 1967, Horton, in his full Detroit Tigers uniform, stood on top of his car in the midst of the turmoil and pleaded for peace. His pleas helped, but the riots continued for five more days. His leadership in the time of Detroit's great crisis is still recalled. The offered jersey is very rare. It shows nice use and has all original lettering and numbering; this is very rare for a Tigers' shirt as most were stripped down after the season and given to farm clubs or other organizations. The jersey has a few inches cut off of the tail. We believe that this was done by Horton, who played at a husky 5'11" and 209 lbs. so that the length would accommodate his preference. Seven silver-white buttons run down the front. A Wilson size 44 tag is still present on the front tail, but the supplemental tagging with the year would have been below and was part of the material that was removed. The Old English sewn-on Navy blue "D" on the front is all original, as are the sewn-on Navy blue "HORTON" and the sewn-on Navy blue 23 on the back. In 2000, a Willie Horton statue was erected at Comerica Park in Detroit when his number 23 was retired by the Tigers. The statue pays homage to Horton's fine play and also his role in helping to restore peace in Detroit after the 1967 riots. This rare jersey makes a great remembrance for a Detroit Tigers legend.
