Early large-format original photograph of Madison Square Garden, circa 1900. This was the second of three Madison Square Gardens in New York City, notable for its large tower. It was built in 1890 on the same site as the first one, just northeast of Madison Square (intersection of 21st Street and Madison Ave.), and was the second tallest building in New York. The building's main hall was the largest in the world and had a seating capacity of 8,000. It also featured a theater, a concert hall, and the city's largest restaurant. The building closed in 1925 and was demolished the following year. We have seen very few original photos of Madison Square Garden and the offered example is notable for its size. The photo measures 10.5x13.5 inches (visible dimensions) and is mounted upon a heavy cardboard backing. A small diagonal tear is visible in the upper right corner. The photo also displays a few light scratches, nicks, and tiny surface blemishes, none of which detract from its overall Excellent appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 18x22". Please note: While Lelands believes this to be an original photo from the period, because it has been mounted, it will not be accepted for evaluation by PSA. Therefore, no guarantees are made regarding any specific "Type" designations.
