Displayed is a Fred Flintstone hand-painted cell that has been personalized, inscribed and then signed by Bill Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the creators of The Flintstones. The television show was produced by Hanna-Barbera, a production company and studio, which began operations in 1957 after Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer closed its in-house animation studio. Hanna and Barbera had worked for MGM and had created the iconic Tom and Jerry cartoon characters, but after MGM shut down its animation studio, Hanna and Barbera then developed its own animation studio, taking with them many former MGM animation employees. After developing The Adventures of Huckleberry Hound (the first animated show to win an Emmy Award) in 1958, Hanna-Barbera created The Flintstones, the first animated sitcom, a show which was a great success, originally airing on ABC television from 1960-65. The show's main character was Fred Flintstone, with a wife named Wilma and the couple's best friends, Barney and Betty Rubble. The characters lived in a fictionalized town called Bedrock, which had Stone Age equivalents of modern inventions such as cars and washing machines. The characters were based on the characters of the famous television show starring Jackie Gleason, The Honeymooners. The Flintstones also had numerous spin-offs over the years. The hand-painted Fred Flintstone cell features Fred carrying a briefcase with "Top Secret" written on the side of the briefcase. This image of Fred Flintstone is signed and inscribed, "Best Wishes Wayne/Bill Hanna Joe Barbera." The Hanna-Barbera animators have won numerous honors, including Academy and Emmy Awards, and the duo has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The cell is matted to 18.5x16". The frame holding the cell has been torn and damaged, but the cell is matted to 18.5x16", and the matting is in good condition and the cell itself is in excellent condition. Judging from the handwriting, it is clear that Bill Hanna wrote the inscription before signing his name, followed by the signature of Joe Barbera. Both men signed in a fine tip black marker. The offering comes with a PSA/DNA LOA (Cert. #AN02649), that certifies both signatures.
