Displayed is an amazing, original Mae West signed oversized photograph of the famed stage and screen star. West was born in Brooklyn, New York, as Mary Jane West in 1893, and guided by her mother, Tillie, Mae entered show business as a child, and eventually became a star in Vaudeville and on the Broadway stage. She was also a playwright, often writing under the pen name of Jane Mast. She was briefly jailed in the early 1930s on morals charges based on the risqué elements in her stage performance, but the "negative" publicity over her incarceration only seemed to enhance her career. Sometimes, stage shows in which West appeared and/or wrote had two scripts. One script, the usual one, was full of double-entendre and innuendo; the other script was a sanitized version of the usual script for when vice squad officers were suspected of being in the audience. West moved on to Hollywood movies, and in 1932 she made her big screen debut in Night after Night, with George Raft. Then, in 1933, in the film She Done Him Wrong, West, playing the character of Little Lil, uttered her famous line, "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?" In 1935, Mae West was deemed to be the second highest-paid person in the country, trailing only publisher William Randolph Hearst. West was so well-known that Britain's Royal Air Force, at war in 1940, started to informally refer to life jackets as "Mae Wests," as a reference to West's voluptuous build. The term caught on and is still in use today. West had a very long career, and she passed away in 1980. The offered signed photograph is approx. 10x13 inches, matted and framed to 19.5x22.5". Using ink from a fountain pen, West has written, "To Mary [?] Weis [?], Sincerely Mae West." The photo has some handling marks. The offering comes with a PSA/DNA LOA (#AN02546) for the signature, with the LOA stating that PSA/DNA believes that "all additional writing is in West's hand." The Mae West signed and inscribed photo makes a great remembrance for an American icon.
