Presented is a Type I original circa 1951 Jackie Robinson photograph image attributed to the artwork portrait used by Topps to produce Robinson's 1953 Topps card #1. The black and white photograph, taken by famed photographer Barney Stein, measures 8x10". Hall of Famer Robinson had an outstanding season in '52, batting .308 and leading the NL on OBP. In '53, he again had a great year, batting .329, with 95 RBIs and 109 runs. In both '52 and '53, the New York Yankees defeated the Dodgers in a subway World Series. Robinson was a 6-time NL All-Star, the NL Rookie of the Year in '47, and the NL MVP in '49, when he batted .342. Robinson was a part of six Brooklyn pennant winners and was on the Brooklyn Dodgers' only World Champions, in 1955. The displayed card is #1 in the '53 Topps offering of an originally scheduled 280 cards. The card measures approx. 2.625x3.75". The card has tremendous eye appeal. For the '53 Topps cards, Gerry Dvorak and other artists used photographs to create marvelously appealing oil paintings for each card. The front of each '53 card had a red or black rectangle with the player's name, position, and team. The Topps logo and the card number is on the upper left corner. On the verso are the player's batting and fielding stats for '52 and lifetime, the player's curricula vitals, a baseball quiz in cartoon form, and a one-paragraph bio. A Jackie Robinson Topps '53 card, PSA graded NR MINT 9, one with a PSA Pop of 8, only one higher, sold in recent times for just over $250,000, and the offered photo is much, much rarer than a Jackie Robinson card. The Type I photo is in EXCELLENT condition and is blank on the back. The photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA.
