Raft was a Hollywood entertainer who gained great acclaim, mainly for his portrayals of gangsters in crime melodramas of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in 1900 in New York City and grew up in that city's Hall's Kitchen neighborhood in Manhattan. He first gained fame as an actor in the 1931 United Artists film Scarface, where Raft played the second lead to Paul Muni. Some of Raft's films: They Drive by Night, with Humphrey Bogart; Each Day I Die (1939), with James Cagney; Quick Millions, with Spencer Tracey. Raft was a professional boxer for two years, with a lifetime record of nine wins, two losses, and three draws. He was very friendly with Hall of Fame baseball manager Leo Durocher and Raft and Durocher reportedly shared Raft's house in California, and Durocher's association with Raft, who was thought to have ties to organized crime, in part led to Durocher's suspension from baseball as the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The offered page from the autograph album measures 4.4x5.5". The page exhibits some slight foxing and some darkening but is in overall good condition. Using dark ink from a fountain pen, Raft has neatly written, in big and bold script, "To Harry - Best George Raft." The signature page has been encapsulated and the autograph has been PSA/DNA certified as MINT 9.
