Displayed is a 1995 Mark Smith Baltimore Orioles' jersey that was game worn for both the Sept. 5, 1995, game when Cal Ripken Jr. tied Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record at 2,130 and the next night's game, on Sept. 6th, when Ripken broke the consecutive games record in playing his 2,131st game. Smith played eight seasons in the Major Leagues, for five teams. He was with the Orioles from 1994-96, and batted .243 for his MLB career, with 32 homers. In Ripken's record-tying game, played before 46,804 fans, Cal smashed a home run to deep left field in the 6th inning as the Orioles, at home at Camden Yards, defeated the California Angels 8-0. In that contest, Mark Smith played left field, batted ninth, and, matching Ripken's homer, also hit a home run to left field, his second home run of the season, in the bottom of the second inning. In Ripken's record-breaking game, the Orioles defeated the California Angels again, this time by a 4-2 score. Repeating his stellar performance on the previous night, Cal Ripken Jr. again homered, this time with the bases empty in the bottom of the 4th inning. Ripken finished at 2-for-4 on the night, but the game would have been an immense event even if had had gone hitless - because he broke Lou Gehrig's record, a mark that many thought would never be broken. In this historic game, played in front of 46,272 fans at Camden Yards, Mark Smith again played left field and batted ninth. He went 0-for-2 with a walk. Mike Mussina took the win for Baltimore, but all eyes were naturally on the hero of the night, Cal Ripken Jr., and he took a victory lap around the stadium after the game to a tumultuous prolonged ovation. The offered polyester, short-sleeve jersey is white, with orange and black trim. "Orioles" is scripted across the chest, with sewn-on letters, in black with orange trim. Six silver-colored buttons are down the front. The Oriole (bird) logo is on the left sleeve. On the right sleeve is a sewn-on Russell manufacturer's tag. On the left chest is 34 in sewn-on orange numerals with black trim. On the left outside tail: a Russell manufacturer's tag, a Diamond Collection size "46" tag, and three additional tags - "100% polyester", "1" extra length", and "95", for year. On the back is a white nameplate, with "SMITH" in sewn-on black letters with orange trim. Below the nameplate is 34 in sewn-on black numerals with orange trim. The jersey is all original, with very nice use. On the lower left front of the jersey, Smith inscribed, in fine tip black marker, "Game used #2130 - 2131 Ripken's record games." Also in fine tip black marker, Smith signed the jersey under the above-listed inscription and also inscribed "34 1995." The jersey has a few very small stains, but any minor imperfection matters little compared to the opportunity to possess a fine-looking, game used jersey from the Ripken record-tying and record-breaking games, suitably inscribed and signed by a player who played on Ripken's team in such a memorable pair of contests.
