Presented is a Dec. 9, 1939, UCLA versus USC football full ticket (UCLA Rooter - valid with student card) for the Pacific Coast Conference game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum between the two undefeated squads, with a trip to the Rose Bowl at stake. The 0-0 tie in the game, played before 103,000, meant that USC went to the Rose Bowl, where the team lost to Tennessee. UCLA had a 5-3 record going into the game and before the contest, USC had an 8-0-1 mark. Jackie Robinson, at right halfback in the UCLA version of the single wing, was a tremendous college player. In the '39 season, Robinson led major football teams in yards per carry, and he averaged an incredible 20 yards per punt return. He was a true triple-threat, as he could pass and even did some of the team's place-kicking. On defense, Robinson played defensive back. Almost a full eight years later, on April 15, 1947, Baseball Hall of Famer Robinson would break the long-standing Major League "color line" as he integrated modern baseball. The 7-time NL All-Star batted .311 for his ten National League seasons, all with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was the '47 NL Rookie of the Year and the '49 NL MVP, when he led the Senior Circuit in batting (.342) and stolen bases (37). The amazing Robinson was a 4-sport letter winner at UCLA: baseball, basketball, football, and track and field. In the key Dec. 9th game, Robinson made a game-saving tackle at the UCLA 3-yard line, which caused a fumble that UCLA recovered. In the game, Robinson had four carries for 23 yards and 48 yards on four punt returns. The offered full ticket measures 2.2x5.7". It is a student ticket, labeled "U.C.L.A. Rooters." The ducat has a humorous image of a fierce Bruin (for UCLA) and a rather timid-looking mouse, like a Mickey Mouse, representing USC. The ticket has been encapsulated and PSA graded as FULL VG-EX.
