Displayed is a Raging Bull lobby poster signed by Jake LaMotta, the famed World Middleweight Champion fighter who is the central figure in the film. Jake LaMotta was from The Bronx, in New York City. He was the World Middleweight Champion from 1949-51. In his career, he was in 108 fights, with 80 wins, 30 by knockout, 19 loses and four draws. LaMotta was especially known for his six fights with Sugar Ray Robinson. LaMotta only won one of the half-dozen, but each fight was close and LaMotta knocked Robinson to the canvas numerous times. LaMotta, at 5'8", got his Raging Bull nickname for his highly aggressive fighting style, which featured lots of close-in brawling. LaMotta was reputed to have a great chin, meaning in could be hit on the chin with many brutal punches without going down. LaMotta led a tempestuous life, including some bouts with the law. He also testified before a U.S. Senate sub-committee on the underworld's influence on boxing that he had thrown his fight with Billy Fox in order that the mob would set up a title fight for him. The Raging Bull movie was based on LaMotta's biography, Raging Bull: My Story. The movie was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Robert De Niro as LaMotta. De Niro gained 60 pounds for the role. When the film was first released, it was a 1980 box office bomb, but appreciation for the film rose, and De Niro won an Academy Award as Best Actor for his work. The lobby poster is matted and framed at 27.5x41". The film's grittiness was enhanced by shooting the movie in black and white, and the poster reads, "Robert De Niro" in red letters above the black and white close-up of De Niro. Red letters below the De Niro photo read, "Raging Bull." Using ink from a black marker and writing in a big and bold style, Jake LaMotta has signed the poster and inscribed "Raging Bull" under his signature. The poster's stark nature, with De Niro's eyes, as LaMotta, hauntingly looking slightly upward, creates an almost hypnotic effect and rivets one's interest in this exceptional lobby poster. COMES WITH PSA LOA.
