Presented is a great, signed photo card of a smiling Jackie Robinson, a photo that has become classic because it subtly and simultaneously also shows the Hall of Famer's great energy and boundless enthusiasm for entering the fray on the field. The offered signed photocard is a circa 1955 advertisement for a clothing store. In 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers won the Brooklyn club's first, and only, World Series. Robinson was slowing down, and his final season was in 1956, the Dodgers' next-to-last season in Brooklyn before moving to Los Angeles. Robinson's breaking of the so-called Major League color line in 1947, and his subsequent civil rights activity for the rest of his life, certainly make him one of the foremost personages in American history. Because of his justified standing as a crucial activist for social justice, it is possible to partially overlook his enormous talent as a ballplayer. Because Robinson did not enter the Major Leagues until he was already 28 years old, his talent was at its peak only briefly. But what talent! In his best season, in 1949 when he was 30 years old, Robinson simply took over ball game after ball game as he led the Dodgers to the NL pennant. He led the NL in batting (.342), stolen bases (37), and sacrifices (17). He was the '49 NL MVP. In the presented offering, notice how Robinson seems to be just itching to run out of the dugout and onto the playing field. His right foot is on the top dugout step, he is leaning forward with his left arm just above his knee, and his bat in his right hand. Robinson is ready for the competition he so dearly loved - a great shot. The back of the card shows the unnamed clothing store's address as "111 WEST 125TH STREET/NEW YORK 27, N.Y.," an address in the Harlem section of New York City's Borough of Manhattan. The bottom of the back of the card reads, 'Uptown New York's Most Complete Men's Store." There is no inscription or personalization. Robinson's beautiful autograph, in blue ink, is right across the center. There are a few spots of paper loss on back. The photo card has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA has certified Robinson's signature as MINT 9.
