Glass plate copy negative capturing the ceremony at the dedication of Miller Huggins Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1931. The image pictures members of the New York Yankees, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Landis, and numerous spectators as Huggins' plaque in centerfield is unveiled. The identity of the woman unveiling the statue is unknown, but it is most likely Huggins' sister (Huggins never married). Huggins was instrumental in the Yankees making St. Petersburg its spring training home in 1925. After Huggins died in 1929, the city decided to rename the field in his honor. In 1963 a plaque honoring Casey Stengel was added next to that of Huggins and the field was renamed Huggins-Stengel Field (today it is known as the Huggins-Stengel Baseball Complex). The negative (5x4") displays several small areas of emulsion loss along the borders. Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.
