Displayed is a 1951 Montreal Royals team-signed Official Spalding International League ball. The Montreal Royals were one of the two Brooklyn Dodgers Triple-A teams in '51, the other club being St. Paul. Montreal finished the regular season at 95-59. They won the International League playoffs and defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, then a Triple-A American Association farm team of the Boston Braves, to win minor league baseball's top prize, the Junior World Series. The signatures (20) include many famed Brooklyn Dodgers before and/or after they played for the Dodgers: autographs: Walt Alston, Tom Lasorda, Dan Bankhead, Jim Gilliam, Al Gionfriddo, George Shuba, George Pfister, Bobby Morgan, Jim Hughes, and more. Hall of Fame manager Walt Alston, long-time Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers manager, skippered the '51 Royals. In his 23-year Major League managing career, Alston was a 7-time NL pennant winner and a 4-time World Series Champion, all with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1954-76). One of Alston's key pitchers on the Royals that season was Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda. A left-handed pitcher, Lasorda went 12-8 with the Royals in '51. Lasorda was the Dodgers manager from 1976-1996, winning four pennants and two World Series. Dan Bankhead was the first African American pitcher in the Major Leagues, and Jackie Robinson's road roommate in the later part of the '47 season. Jim "Junior" Gilliam played both the infield and outfield for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers for 17 years. Al Gionfriddo was a 5'7" outfielder who is most famous for a game-saving catch near the 415-foot marker in left field at Yankee Stadium in Game 6 of the 1947 World Series. George Shuba was an effective reserve outfielder for some of Brooklyn's greatest teams, including the 1955 World Champions. The autographs rate bold 7/10 and the ball is in EX condition. With the signatures of two Hall of Fame managers and many famous stars, the ball makes a great Dodgers memento.
