On December 3, 1938, the Brooklyn Dodgers of the NFL played an exhibition game against a team of collegiate all stars from the New York area, with the proceeds benefitting Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant refugees. Offered here is an exceedingly rare complete football uniform (jersey, pants, and socks) worn by a member of the Collegiate All-Star team in that game. This is the first example of this collegiate football uniform we have ever seen, let alone offered, and it may be the lone survivor.

The white jersey features a large shield patch on the front bearing the colors of the United States flag. "All Star 1938" is lettered in white on the top portion of the patch. The number "33" appears in red tackle twill on the reverse. Red-white-and-blue accents adorn each sleeve. An "O'Shea" label and adjacent "44" size tag appear on the interior left front tail. An additional tag on the interior right front tail makes note that the garment is "Knitted of Rayon & Cotton." The silver satin pants feature a red-white-and-blue cloth accent on the reverse of each leg. An "O'Shea" label and adjacent "40" size tag, along with a tag bearing an "R," appear in the waistband. Together with a pair of matching white socks featuring red-white-and-blue accents. Each of the items displays moderate wear, including light staining and a few small insect holes.

Although the uniform cannot be attributed to a specific player (we cannot find a program from the game to tell us who wore number "33"), we are certain it was produced for the December 3, 1938, benefit game between the Collegiate All Stars and Brooklyn Dodgers. In our research, we found a 1938 newspaper photo promoting the game in which Sid Luckman of the Collegiate All Stars is wearing this exact style uniform (a photocopy of the image accompanies the uniform). The Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Collegiate All Stars 27-14 in front of 9,615 fans at Ebbets Field that day. The star of the game for the Collegiate All Stars was Columbia's Sid Luckman, who threw one touchdown pass and whose long thirty-eight run set up the second score. Significant football jerseys, especially complete uniforms, from this era are scarce and this is one of the finest 1930s collegiate examples we have ever offered.
