Presented is a Boston Garden season program for 1928-29, the second year of Boston Garden's existence. The Garden was built over North Station, a major railroad hub. The program is a combination program and yearbook for the various events that were scheduled in the Boston Garden in that winter season. The program was set up with a "centerfold" insert that covers the event of the evening, a playoff game in the NHL's semi-final round for the NHL Championship on March 21, 1929, between the Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens. The centerfold gives the starting lineups for both the Bruins and the Canadiens and lists each team's substitutes. Boston won that night's game by a 1-0 score to give them a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five semi-finals. The Bruins went on to sweep the Canadiens and then sweep the Rangers in the league's championship series. The colorful program cover depicts the Boston Garden almost like a Roman Parthenon, with Boston's version beaming with light. Ten small "banners" on the cover announce the main types of events scheduled in the Garden: concerts, bike races, circus, boxing, track meets, skating, dances, horse shows, hockey, and wrestling. Basketball was not touted on the cover, but later on, the Boston Celtics would establish a dynasty while making the Boston Garden their home. Inside, the program's 64 pages are full of information about the Garden's offerings. The program touts the Garden as "New England's Greatest Sports Palace." The program lists the seating capacity as 13,500 for track meets, 14,500 for hockey, and 17,500 for boxing. Under the arena floor were 13 miles of pipes that would circulate a brine solution to freeze an inch of water over the surface for hockey. Inside the program is a virtual potpourri of sports information. There is an article on college hockey, with particular focus on the Harvard and Yale teams. There is a photo of the Boston Bruins hockey team, and short biographies of some of the Bruins' key players, such as Hall of Famer Eddie Shore. There is a wealth of information on the National Hockey League and its then ten teams and a floor plan for the Garden's first floor. There is also a page of hockey lexicon and full-page photos of boxers, such as Jack Sharkey and Jack Dempsey. The program is in excellent condition, the cleanest Boston Garden season Program we have ever seen. The Boston Garden was demolished in 1998. The program's photos, articles, and even advertisements create a great vintage trip back in time to the hockey and other myriad events at the fabled Boston Garden.
