One-page handwritten letter, undated, signed by Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg. PSA has encapsulated the letter and certified the signature as "Authentic." In his letter, on "Continental Airlines" letterhead, Sandberg writes to Dallas Green, general manager of the Chicago Cubs, and informs Green of his father's death. In part: "Dear Dallas, I wanted to inform you myself that my Dad passed away early Thursday morning. He went quietly in front of all the family. A moment I'll always remember. . . . I also want to say thanks for letting Sandy feel a part of the Chicago Cubs. Some of my best memories will be my dad in a Cubs hat having a great time at Wrigley." Signed simply "Ryne." Both the text and signature are rendered in black ink and grade 8/10. Sandberg's father, Derwent "Sandy" Sandberg, died on July 2, 1987, thereby dating the letter. Sandberg was on injured reserve with a sprained ankle at the time of his father's death, which allowed him to be with his father during his last days. While Sandberg's signature is not rare, handwritten letters are, especially those with significant personal content such as this. This is the first Sandberg handwritten letter we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen another at auction in the past twenty years. Sandberg was clearly established as one of the game's top players in 1987, having won four consecutive Gold Glove Awards and the 1984 National League MVP Award at that point in his young career. He retired after the 1997 season with 282 home runs, 1,061 RBI, and a .285 lifetime average. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005. The letter (7.25x10.5") displays two horizontal mailing folds and light toning.
