This large collection of Carl Furillo material consists mainly of signed items (including a handwritten letter to Branch Rickey) and vintage photos (picturing Furillo both on and off the field).
Signed Items (8): 1) One-page handwritten letter to Branch Rickey. Although no year is listed, it has a Brooklyn Dodgers "Received" stamp on the front that is dated "Jan 11 1943." Furillo was serving in the Army at the time and he writes to Rickey to thank him for a subscription to The Sporting News and also to request a shipment of baseballs. In part: "Branch is there a chance I can get a few baseballs from you. . . . There's a bunch of fellows here that can play ball + that's one way I can keep my eye on the old apple till I get back to baseball again I really miss it this year. It's like losing your best friend." Signed "Carl Furillo." Both the text and signature are scripted in blue ink and grade 9/10 overall. 5.5x9". EX, with two horizontal folds. 2) One-page typed letter, dated March 5, 1945, signed by "Pvt. Carl Furillo" in pencil (8/10). The letter is written to Harold Roetteger (Branch Rickey's assistant with the Brooklyn Dodgers) and in it, Furillo, who was serving in the Philippines during World War II, thanks him for sending him The Sporting News. 8x10.5". VG with horizontal and vertical folds. 3-8) Various signed items, consisting of a real-photo postcard, three photos (two 8x10", the other 4x6.25"), a 1950 government postcard, and a postal return receipt card (four of the items are accompanied by individual COAs from JSA). Excellent condition overall.
Photographs (20): Eleven picture Furillo in uniform, as either a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers or Montreal Royals (five picture him receiving gifts at Carl Furillo Day at Ebbets Field). The others include Furillo playing with his dogs, convalescing in the hospital, and posing with his awards at his home. Four photos capture Sandy Koufax and other former Dodgers players attending Furillo's funeral in 1989. The photos range in size from 2.25x4" to 8x10" and are in Excellent condition overall. Please note that while these are all vintage photographs, none have been evaluated by PSA, so no guarantees are made regarding specific Type designations.
