Collection of five documents originating from the Elmira Baseball Club relating to the purchase of player contracts from the Baltimore Elite Giants Negro League club, including Junior Gilliam. The collection consists of two handwritten letters, each dated July 3. 1950, from Richard D. Powell (vice president of the Balitmore Elite Giants) offering the Elmira club the opportunity to purchase, respectively, the contracts of Junior Gilliam and Leroy Ferrell. The price for Gilliam's contract is $5,000, while Ferrell's is being offered for $2,500. Accompanying each letter is a typed biographical summary for each player, including the teams he has played with in the Negro Leagues and his accomplishments. Also included is a biographical sheet for pitcher Joe Black. Both of the handwritten letters (8.5x8.5") display one one vertical and two horizontal folds, as well a staple hole in the upper right corner. Each biographical sheet (8.5x11") displays a staple hole in the upper right corner.
Collection of seven outstanding original film negatives, each featuring a Hall of Fame player or umpire. The collection consists of the following: Gabby Hartnett (Chicago Cubs), Bill Klem (umpire), Mickey Cochrane (Philadelphia A's), Bob Feller (Cleveland Indians) Hack Wilson (Chicago Cubs), Jessie Haines (St. Louis Cardinals), and Rabbit Maranville (Boston Braves). Each negative (5x7"), displays a production code along the border, and minor edge wear. Excellent condition overall.
