Displayed is a Notre Dame Joe Montana jersey presented to Joe by his coach at a Notre Dame, Dan Devine, at a Joe Montana Testimonial Dinner in Joe's Hometown of Monongahela, PA on April 17, 1982. The offering comes with a program to the dinner as well. When Dan Devine took over the head coaching reins at Notre Dame, he told his wife, 'I'm gonna start Joe Montana in the final spring game." Devine's wife asked, "Who's Joe Montana?" Devine answered, "He's the guy who's going to feed our family for the next few years." Devine was certainly correct. Montana led Notre Dame to the AP/Coaches National Championship in 1977, with a victory against Texas in the Cotton Bowl. On Jan. 1, 1979, Montana engineered a tremendous comeback in the famed "Chicken Soup Bowl." This was when Notre Dame returned to the Cotton Bowl after the 1978 season to face Houston. Montana had to leave the game with symptoms of hypothermia. He was fed fluids intravenously, wrapped in blankets and given chicken soup. It worked. he returned late in the third quarter, with Notre Dame trailing 34-12, and crafted an amazing comeback that resulted in three touchdowns and a 35-34 win as time expired. Of course, Montana would go on to win four Super Bowls in the NFL. The offered, short-sleeved mesh jersey is white, with Navy blue numerals and lettering. On front is 3, in a Navy-blue stenciled numeral. Each sleeve has 3, in a Navy-blue stenciled numeral. On back, at the top, is "MONTANA" in Navy blue stenciled lettering and under Montana's name is 3, in a Navy-blue stenciled numeral. On the lower left outside tail is a Champion Products manufacturer's tag showing "M" for size and reading 100% nylon. The included dinner program measures 5.4x8.4", and it has 48 pages. The cover reads, "MID MON VALLEY WIDE/JOE MONTANA TESTIMONIAL/SUPER BOWL XVI MVP/Saturday April 17, 1982." Photos on the cover of the program show Montana on the covers of four national magazines. The charming content inside the program has a great small town feel and includes photos as a baby and a young boy. Also included is a gag currency bill, paper money in an unspecified amount that has a broadly smiling caricature of Montana in the center and reads, in part, "Congratulations SUPER BOWL XVI WORLD CHAMPS/MVP JOE MONTANA." The jersey, the program, and the gag currency are all in EXCELLENT condition, and the offering makes a great Joe Montana remembrance.
