Three-page handwritten letter, dated November 26, 1917, signed by James Naismith (1861-1939), inventor of the game of basketball. In his lengthy missive, written while stationed in France as a military chaplain during World War I, Naismith corresponds with a friend (Fred Will) from back home in Vineland, Kansas. He begins by writing how much he misses the company of his friends in Vineland, and then discusses how difficult it is to relate to the children in France because he doesn't speak the language and so few of the children speak English. He closes by revealing how much he admires the French people. In part: "The kindly spirit the devotion to country often put me to shame. The people here have sacrificed greatly for their country and are willing to go on with the sacrifice until the end. God will bless this land yet and they will be a sunny happy people as soon as the burden is lifted. The more I see of the good side of the people the more I like them and think that a glorious future is before them." He closes by writing "Ever true to Vineland friends - J. Naismith." Both the signature and text have been scripted in black fountain pen and grade 9/10 on average. Each page of the letter (8.5x11"), written on unlined sheets, displays one horizontal and two vertical mailing folds, along the edges and intersections of which are several small to moderate tears.
