Displayed is a 1974 Chicago Fire football team souvenir collection. The Chicago Fire was a team that played for one season, 1974, in the inaugural season of the World Football League. The Fire was the first team in the new WFL to sign a player as Chicago inked former Notre Dame receiver Jim Seymour. The Fire also signed former Chicago Bears quarterback Virgil Carter. The team was coached by Jim Spavital, who had coached in the Canadian Football League. The Chicago team started out well, winning seven of the club's first nine games. Then, injuries hit heavily, and the Fire began losing games. Attendance had averaged an encouraging 33,858 for the team's first five home games, at Soldier Field. As the team slump continued, attendance dropped. Chicago went on to drop 11 straight games after their 7-2 start, and the team finished with a regular season record of 7-13. That record included a forfeit when the Chicago owner refused to fly the team to the franchise's final game of the season, at Philadelphia. The team soon disbanded. The included items in the offering: 1) a 5.5" long plastic football. Visible on the football is the Chicago Fire logo and the words, "The Chicago Fire." 2) A drinking glass with the words, "The Chicago Fire" and the team's logo. The glass has a height of 6.5" and a diameter at the top of 2.75". 3) A "Thermo-Serv" coffee cup with both the WFL and Chicago Fire logos. The cup is 4" tall and has an upper diameter of 3.1". All three of the items are in EXCELLENT or better condition. Since the Fire were a one-year team, anything from them is rare.
