Bobby Orr, Boston Bruins' Hall of Fame defenseman, was a revolutionary. Not in the sense of other Boston Revolutionary heroes such as Paul Revere, Crispus Attucks, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock, but in the sense of revolutionizing the game of hockey. Presented is a colorful, unused store display advertising Orr On Ice, a 1970 book written by Orr with Dick Grace, published by Prentice-Hall. Orr revolutionized hockey by changing the way defensemen played the game. Before Orr, defenseman occasionally charged up ice and attacked the opponent's goal, but a defenseman going end-to-end on the ice was rare. Orr's tremendous puck control, great passing, excellent speed, and great shot enabled him to run the Boston attack and swoop in on the enemy goal, sometimes as a kind of fourth forward, and sometimes becoming one of the three forwards, temporarily, as one of the actual forwards dropped back on defense to cover for Orr. In a 12-year NHL career, his first ten seasons with Boston and his final two years with the Chicago Black Hawks, Orr was astounding. He helped Boston to two Stanley Cups, the first in 1969-70. In that season, the incredible Orr scored 33 goals and added 87 assists, totaled 120 points to win the Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer, and led the NHL in assists. He also won the '69-70 Hart Trophy as MVP, the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman, and the Smythe Trophy as the league's playoff MVP. Orr was a 2-time Stanley Cup winner, won 8-consecutive Norris Trophies, was a 3-time Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP, and was a 2-time Ross Trophy winner and a 2-time Smythe Trophy recipient. In his career, in 657 games, he had 270 goals and 645 assists for 915 points. The store display, on thick, pressed cardboard, measures 13.75x21.75". The display reads, "ON SALE HERE/ORR ON ICE/By BOBBY ORR/With Dick Grace/'ORR ON ICE' is the way I play hockey!" - Bobby Orr/More than 140 photos covering every facet of the great sport./Bobby describes and teaches his unique style of play." The store display features a color action photo of Orr rushing up ice. The display is in excellent condition and on the back has an unused fold-out "stand" to allow the item to stand alone.
