The 1965 Baltimore Orioles were a talented team on the rise, with a number of future Hall of Famers and star players that would go to win the World Series the next season, and from 1966-71 win four AL pennants and two World Series. Displayed is a 1965 Baltimore Orioles game-used cap from the Louis Kendrick Collection. Louis Kendrick is noted in the hobby for his extensive and meticulously organized collection. The cap is from an unknown player. The '65 Orioles were managed by Hank Bauer and they finished in 3rd place in the American League, with an excellent record of 97-63. Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson hit .287 that year, with 18 homers and 80 RBIs. Boog Powell played first base and bashed 17 home runs, with 72 RBIs, and right-fielder Curt Blefary had 22 homers and 70 RBIs. Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio was at shortstop. Paul Blair was in center field, and notable pitchers included Harvey Haddix and Don Larsen: Haddix is famous for pitching 12 perfect innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 29, 1959, against the Milwaukee Braves, only to have the Braves win the game in the 13th inning, and Larsen is remembered for his World Series perfect game in 1956 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. The pitching staff included Hall of Famers Jim Palmer and Robin Roberts. Key starter Milt Pappas went 14-7, with a 1.89 ERA, and he would become the key player in a three-player trade for Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Frank Robinson on Dec. 9, 1965. Robinson went on to win the AL Triple Crown in 1966 as he led Baltimore to the World's Championship. The black cap has an orange and black Orioles logo in front. As is usual with an item from the Louis Kendrick Collection, there is a small (approx. 2.1x3.1") card stapled to the front of the cap. The staple is easily removable, and the card reads, "CAP 1965. BALTIMORE ORIOLES. This CAP was WORNED (sic) BY THE 1965 BALTIMORE ORIOLES./SEPT. 3 1965." In the back of the hatband is an "E. Rosenstein Sons" manufacturer's tag that reads, in part, "CINO-RUBBER VISOR/SHOWERED PRE-SHRUNK 100% Wool Fabric PRO MODEL." The back hatband also has a 6 3/4 size tag. The game-used cap shows light use and it is in excellent condition.
