Rare signature of former World Colored welterweight and middleweight champion H. Lewis Hardwick, known better today by his nickname, "The Cocoa Kid." PSA has encapsulated the signature and certified it as "Authentic." Hardwick has inscribed the autograph-album page in Spanish: "a un amigo mix/por Cocoa Kid." Both the inscription and signature have been scripted in pencil and grade "8/10." Hardwick was a Puerto Rican native of African American descent and was active in the 1930s and 1940s. One of a group of top African American fighters known as the "Black Murderer's Row," Hardwick won the World Colored Championship welterweight title in 1936 and the World Colored Championship middleweight title in 1943. He retired in 1948 with a career record of 178-58-11. The autograph-album page (6x4") displays several binder holes along the left border and is otherwise in Excellent condition.
