Many local New Orleans artists were invited to create on-site fight posters for the heavyweight title bout between Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks at the Louisiana Superdome on September 15, 1978. These local posters, which were usually smaller than the standard mass-produced on-site fight posters, were distributed throughout the city prior to the bout, with each displaying a distinct local flair. Offered here is one such poster created by "Payton," whose signature appears in the lower right. The colorful poster features images of both fighters amid several New Orleans city scenes and the Superdome. Ali defeated Spinks by unanimous decision to regain his title, making him the first boxer to win the heavyweight title three times. The poster (16.5x22.75"; visible dimensions) displays several light creases which do not significantly detract from its overall Excellent appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 24x30.5". The size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
