Rare and unusual piece of memorabilia in this wooden shard from the goalposts used in the 1958 NFL Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants, in what has become known in football folklore as "The Greatest Game Ever Played." Piece measures 15" long by roughly 1.5" wide, with white painted surface from the edges of the posts and exposed wood where it was broken off. Wide side of the flat surface is hand-painted with "1958 Colts World Champions" in blue and black, on the side below is the final score of "Colts 23 Gaints (sic) 17." Despite its legendary status, the game was plagued by no less than six first-half turnovers, with the Colts converting them to the tune of a 14-3 lead. Though the host Giants rallied to take a 17-14 lead, Baltimore legend Johnny Unitas led a two-minute drill resulting in a game tying field goal to send the game into overtime for the first time in history. After New York stalled in its first possession, Unitas again piloted a drive to a winning touchdown on a 1-yard run by Alan Ameche to secure the championship. This very game is widely credited with increasing the popularity of the sport, building to its current status as America's Sunday afternoon sports destination from September through January. Comes with an interesting typewritten letter from The Pennsylvania Railroad dated December 28, 1958, on blue 8.5x11" stationery detailing train instructions to the game, which was played at Yankee Stadium.
