Collection of eight rare nineteenth-century boxing cabinets, each produced in 1886 by New York photographer John Wood, who is best known today for producing the photos used on the 1886 Old Judge N167 New York Giants tobacco cards. Each studio photo pictures the respective fighter bare chested, with all but one striking a standard boxing pose. Wood's credit stamp and address "Opposite the People's Theatre New York" appear along the base of each mount. The name of each fighter is neatly scripted in black ink at the base of the mount, but all are identifiers and not signatures. Each card (4.25x6.5") displays two semicircle tack holes (one along each border). Other flaws include creases, abrasions, scratches, and light stains. Good condition overall. The boxers represented here are as follows: 1) Billy Edwards (1844-1907). Former lightweight champion. Hall of Fame. 2) Jack Root (1876-1963). Former light-heavyweight champion. Hall of Fame. 3) George Byers (1872-1937). Former World Colored heavyweight and middleweight champion. 4) Dave Sullivan (1877-1929). Former featherweight champion. 5) Dan Creedon (1868-1942). Former middleweight champion. 6) Joe Gans (1874-1910). Former lightweight champion. First African American boxing champion of the twentieth century. Hall of Fame. 7) Solly Smith (1871-1933). Former featherweight champion. First world champion of Hispanic descent. 8) Ike Weir (1867-1908). Former featherweight champion.
