Joe DiMaggio retired as a baseball player after the 1951 season, and in 1952 the great center fielder asked a friend to introduce him to Marilyn Monroe, the rising movie star. DiMaggio and Monroe soon formed a relationship, and less than two years later, in 1954, they were married. Presented is a Type I original photograph that shows DiMaggio and Monroe on their honeymoon, as the two newlyweds went on a worldwide tour, with an important stay in Japan, where DiMaggio served as a representative of American baseball. On the honeymoon "tour," Monroe sometimes entertained American troops in Korea. Only nine months later, Monroe filed for divorce. DiMaggio had spent 13 years in the Major Leagues, all with the New York Yankees. He had missed three seasons because of service in the U.S. Army in World War II. DiMaggio helped the Yankees to nine World Championships, batted a career .325, hit 361 lifetime home runs, and set an MLB record that still stands by hitting in 56 straight games in 1941. Monroe's stardom continued to rise as DiMaggio's stardom began to diminish, and that was difficult for DiMaggio. In 1953, Monroe became Playboy's first centerfold. Monroe's fame rose even higher with her 1955 film, The Seven Year Itch. Also, in '53, Monroe's films Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire were released. In later years, after their divorce, DiMaggio and Monroe began to rekindle their relationship, but Monroe died from a reported drug overdose in 1962. The offered Type I original O.S. Army Signal Corps photo shows Monroe and DiMaggio in a black and white photo measuring approx. 8.25x10". On the back of the photo is a suggested caption: "Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio on their honeymoon .... at a press conference at the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo, Japan." The photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as AUTHENTIC PHOTO. The offering offers a wonderfully artistic, creative Type I photo of two of the most famous idols in American history, the couple shot upward, their pleased faces set behind a luxuriant array of flowers.
