Incredible framed display includes a horseshoe nail used by the immortal Secretariat during his record-setting run at the 1973 Belmont Stakes. Provenance of the nail is exceptional as this originated from Jim Gaffney, who was "Big Red's" exercise rider and oversaw the removal and handling of all hardware pieces such as this. Measuring 37.75x23", the display includes six pieces, with the nail prominently featured. Across the top is a stellar 30x5.5" color panoramic photo signed by jockey Ron Turcotte in black marker - the photo had to be panoramic to capture the magnitude of the Triple Crown winner's inconceivable 31-length victory to secure the crown's final leg. The first slot below the photo is occupied by the 7x5" registry information card for this very nail, signed by both Gaffney and owner Penny Chenery; the nail itself is to its immediate right. In the center is a plate engraved with, "SECRETARIAT - Wins Triple Crown - June 9, 1973 - Belmont Stakes - by 31 Lengths - Track Record Time 2:24." To the right is an uncashed $2 Win ticket, with the far right slot occupied by that day's Belmont Racing Form, along with a First Day Cover postmarked May 4, 1974. A different Secretariat nail from the Belmont, in a simple lucite display, was included in our 2017 Masters Auction, where it drew a winning bid in excess of $28,000. Hard to overstate the rarity and significance of these items, exceptional history.
