"I want to win that championship tonight, but I want to win it clean," said hockey coach Reggie Dunlap, played by Paul Newman, in his inspiring pep talk in the iconic hockey cult film Slap Shot. "Toe Blake, Dit Clapper, Eddie Shore. They were the greats!" Offered are the vintage signatures of two all-time hockey greats: the aforementioned Dit Clapper and his long-time teammate Frank Brimsek, both Hall of Famers who played for the Boston Bruins. Aubrey "Dit" Clapper was the first NHL player to play 20 years in the league (1927-28 through 1946-47). Clapper is only one of nine players to play at least 20 years with the same NHL team. Dit is one of only two players to be an NHL All-Star at both forward and defense. He started his NHL career as a right wing, and he played his later years as a defenseman. As a right wing, Clapper was part of "The Dynamite Line," a high scoring trio, including Cooney Weiland and Dutch Gainor, that was one of the first NHL lines to have a nickname. Clapper was a 6-time All-Star and won three Stanley Cups. In his career, he tallied 229 goals and added 248 assists, for 477 points. He was also a coach of the Bruins. Brimsek was an American from Minnesota who played ten NHL seasons (1938-39 through 1949-50), all but his final campaign (as a Chicago Black Hawk) with the Bruins. When Brimsek first played with the Bruins, he quickly became a sensation, setting an NHL record with 231 minutes and 54 seconds of consecutive scoreless play. His propensity for shutouts earned him the nickname of "Mr. Zero." He finished his rookie season with 10 shutouts. He won the Calder Trophy and the Vezina Trophy in his first season. He ended his career with two Boston Bruins Stanley Cups, two Vezina Trophies, and a 2.70 GAA. Each of these blue fountain pen signatures was signed during the playing careers of Clapper and Brimsek, making these autographs more desirable than later signatures. Each of the signatures is on a piece of paper approximately 2x3.25". The Brimsek signature is encapsulated and PSA graded MINT 9. The Clapper signature has also been encapsulated, and while it is only PSA graded as "AUTHENTIC," the signature looks pretty Minty to us. Here are two Bruin greats.
