Major League Baseball’s very first flannel vest jersey was debuted by the Chicago Cubs in the 1940 season. While the experiment didn’t last long (three seasons), the Cincinnati Reds restarted the vest jersey campaign in 1956 and this time, the vest style caught on with other MLB teams including the Pirates (1957), A’s (‘62), Indians (‘63), and Orioles (‘68). In today's marketplace, flannel vest jerseys are considered highly coveted by knowledgeable collectors. Offered here is Bob Friend’s 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates game-worn vest jersey. The seven-button road gray flannel presented was donned by Friend during the Bucs' 95-59-1 regular season campaign and World Series run in which they beat the New York Yankees, four games to three. On the season, Friend, a right-hander, went 18-12 with 16 complete games, four shutouts and 183 Ks. The vest jersey features PIRATES (in three-inch letters) across the chest and 19 (in 8” numbers) on the verso, all sewn-on in black felt twill outlined in gold, along with black/gold piping around the sleeve openings. Some of the letters are partially loose. The tagging includes “MacGregor 44” sewn on the inside of the back collar and a “Set 2 1960” flap tag on the interior button path next to an embroidered “60” patch. All seven buttons are intact. This example demonstrates great wear with plenty of fraying shown around the collar‘s gold stitching with none of the black trim remaining and a couple of minor holes on the front of the jersey. A nice piece of baseball history from one of the Pirates greatest seasons ever.
