Don Mattingly was a superb hitter and a top flight first baseman who from 1984-1989 had six Major League seasons that had him riding an express train right to the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, he injured his back in 1987, and again, and more seriously, in 1990, and starting in that season, his performance fell off because of his injury to a level that precluded Cooperstown. Displayed are a 1985 Don Mattingly New York Yankees rookie era game used signed and inscribed cap and a Mattingly game used signed batting glove. Known as "Donnie Baseball" and "The Hit Man," Mattingly played all 14 of his Major League seasons with the Yankees (1982-95). After a seven-game cup of coffee with the Yankees in 1982, Mattingly's first extended play in the Majors came in 1983, when he played in 91 games, batting .283. Mattingly became a star in 1984, as he played in 153 games and led the American League in batting, at .343. He added 23 home runs, 91 runs scored and 110 RBIs. His career accelerated. He won the AL MVP in '85, batting .324, with 35 homers and a league-leading 143 RBIs. Mattingly continued his excellence through 1989, as from '86-89 he hit between .303 and .352 each season, with between 18 and 31 homers in each of those four seasons, and between 88 and 115 RBIs in each of those years. From 1990 through his final season in 1995, Mattingly's performance declined, and he finished with a career .307 batting average, with 222 homers. After his playing career, Mattingly managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins, and in 2023 he was a bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. The offered Mattingly cap has number "23" written in blue marker under the bill by an unknown hand. On the back of the sweatband is a New Era Pro Model tag. The bill of the hat is inscribed and signed by Mattingly, using a silver marker, as "Don Mattingly #23." The cap comes with a COA from Ray Schulte, Sports Men Player Rep. Also included is a signed rookie era Mattingly game used batting glove, worn on his right hand. The Franklin glove is an adult sized XL. The batting glove shows amazing wear. Using a blue marker, Mattingly neatly signed the batting glove on the wrist strap. The displayed items come with a PSA LOA. The offering makes a wonderful remembrance for a great player whose performance, before his injured back became a detriment, was consistent with baseball greatness.
