Protective rubber mouthpiece molded for "Iron" Mike Tyson originates from the collection of assistant manager Steve Lott and was worn for his first two Heavyweight Championship title defenses. This custom mouthpiece has been confirmed as having an identical bite pattern to Tyson's from that period, and comes in original case with "Tyson Mouthpiece" written in red ballpoint ink and "Tyson vs Smith & Thomas" above (also inside the lid) in black ballpoint ink, as noted by Lott. Tyson instilled terror in the Heavyweight division in the mid-'80s, and his November 1986 win over Trevor Berbick was not only the 28th straight to start his career, but it also gave him hardware for the first time in the form of the WBC Championship belt. Less than four months later, Tyson retained in a unification bout with James "Bonecrusher" Smith, scoring a decisive 12-round decision to win the WBA title as well. Only three months thereafter, on May 30, 1987, Tyson's second defense saw his record raised to 30-0 with a 6th round TKO over Pinklon Thomas; this mouthpiece was worn for both of those defenses.
