Displayed is a Yuri Gagarin and Alexei Leonov cosmonaut autograph collection. Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, 1934-1968, was a Soviet pilot, and he was aboard Vostok 1 on the first successful manned flight from earth into outer space, which took place on April 12, 1961. Gagarin grew up on a small farm in Russia, and when German forces occupied his family's farm in World War II, a German soldier tried to hang Yuri's brother from a tree. The brother survived and in retaliation, Yuri secretly became a saboteur against the Germans. Helping Gagarin to be selected for the first human flight into outer space was his small size; at 5'2", he could maneuver inside the tiny space capsule. Akso aiding in his selection was his athletic ability. He had been an effective amateur hockey goalie. His high intelligence also aided in his selection. Gagarin's flight only lasted for one outer space orbit around Earth, but he had broken new ground, and he became an international hero. Gagarin has autographed a postcard, of the Taras Shevchenko Monument in Moscow. The colored postcard measures 4x5.75"; using blue ink, Gagarin has neatly signed the front of the postcard. The postcard has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO. Also included is a 4.1x5.9" black and white photo of Gagarin that shows him in his military uniform. The photo shows some darkening because of the passage of time. The offering also includes an autographed photo souvenir card of Soviet and Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. He was the first human to conduct a spacewalk. On March 18, 1965, Leonov walked on a 16-foot tether from the Voskhod 2 mission for 12 minutes and 9 seconds. The signed Leonov card measures 4.25x6.6". Leonov signed the front of the card in big and bold fine tip black marker. This souvenir card has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as "AUTHENTIC AUTO". Also included is a great Leonov signed envelope. In what appears to be a first day special issue, the approx. 4.5x6.25" envelope depicts a colorful Soviet stamp commemorating Leonov's spacewalk, and a special Soviet cancellation that also depicts the famous spacewalk. Leonov has signed the first day postcard in a very bold, big signature in black marker. The envelope has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as "AUTHENTIC AUTO". Overall, the cosmonaut autograph collection has great historical value in that it dates to the "Space Race" between the United States and the Soviet Union, and it includes the signatures of world-famous cosmonauts.
