"The Kid" was his nickname, especially apt when Ted Williams broke into the Major Leagues in 1939 as a 20-year-old. The Hall of Fame left fielder played through 1960, all with the Boston Red Sox. Offered is the HIGHEST GRADED TICKET STUB from the August 11, 1955, Red Sox game against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium when "The Splendid Splinter" achieved his 2,000th hit. It would be natural to assume that a superb hitter such as Williams would have reached 2,000 hits earlier in his career than in 1955. Two crucial factors kept Williams waiting: His military service as a fighter pilot in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, and his all-time MLB record on-base percentage of .482. Williams missed three seasons, from 1943-45 for his World War II service and almost all of the 1952-53 seasons for his Korean Conflict duty. Williams achieved his record OBP because of his great batting eyes, as he walked 2,021 times in his career; all those walks resulted in it taking him longer to reach 2,000 hits than one would expect. Williams won six batting titles and hit 521 home runs. He stands as the last man to bat .400, as he hit .406 in 1941. On the day in '55 when Williams got his 2,000th hit, he wasted no time, facing the Yanks' Bob Turley in the first inning and sending a blooper into left center field that fell among left fielder Elston Howard, shortstop Phil Rizzuto, and center fielder Mickey Mantle. He also walked and doubled in the game, going 2 for 4. The Yanks took the game 5-3, as New York starter Turley got the win, besting Boston starter and loser Frank Baumann. The offered ticket stub measures approx. 1.4x2.7". The $2.10 lower stand stub has been encapsulated and graded PSA VG-EX 4. POP 1 of 2, HIGHEST GRADED.
