"Don't look back," said the marvelous pitcher and baseball showman called Satchel Paige. "Something might be gaining on you." Those words of wisdom were followed by the philosophical Paige himself, as his long pitching career saw him constantly looking forward and moving ahead. Born Leroy Robert Paige in 1906 in Mobile, Alabama, the 6'3 Hall of Fame righthander got his nickname from the time when as a young man working in a train station, he devised a way to handle multiple satchels of travelers at the same time as a way of making more money on tips. Paige was always looking for paydays, which accounted, in part, for the multitude of teams that he played on in his career. Paige pitched professionally in five decades, starting in 1926 for the Chattanooga Lookouts in the Negro Southern League. He won countless games in the Negro American League and the Negro National League, plus he pitched in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Canada, - everywhere. In 1948, with the Cleveland Indians, he became the first African American pitcher in the American League and helped the Indians to the World Series, which Cleveland won as Paige became the first pitcher from the Negro Leagues to play in the World Series. Paige had an American League career record of 28-31, with a 3.29 ERA. From 1956-58, Paige pitched for Miami, in the Triple-A International League, starting and relieving, with a three-year record of 31-22, and ERAs under 3.00 for each season. The offered black & white photo measures 3.5x5.5". Paige's signature is neatly signed in blue ink. Paige was such an ageless performer that he pitched three innings for the Kansas City Athletics, in an actual, regular season home game in 1965, when he was 59 years old, and Paige held the Boston Red Sox scoreless. The offered autographed Paige photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO.
